  • 百子櫃:Wooden cabinet with many small drawers, used for organizing and storing various medicinal herbs.

  • 杏林:Apricot grove, used as a honorific term for fine doctor.

  • 生津止渴:Relieve dryness and stimulate saliva.

  • 清熱解毒:Heat-clearing and toxin-resolving.

  • 潤腸通便:Promotes bowel movement.

  • 藥葫蘆:Bottle gourd as a herbal container.

  • 懸壺濟世:The ‘pot’ refers to a bottle gourd, which is a tool used by ancient Chinese doctors to carry medicine; this idiom denotes doctors treating and saving people.

  • 虎撑、藥鈴:Traditional signaling bell used by roving Chinese doctors.

  • 遊方醫、鈴醫:In ancient times, some roving doctors (bell doctor) would wander the streets to treat people.

四、中醫藥文化教育圖書集(非華語學童)

  • 六氣 / 風、寒、暑、濕、燥、火:

Six Qi (Six Climatic Factors) /  Wind, cold, summer heat, damp, dryness, fire

  • 六邪:Six evils

In cases of extreme environmental changes, or in cases where the body is too weak to adjust to climatic changes, six climatic factors became pathogens that could cause disease especially those that were infectious.

  • 臟腑:Zang-Fu Organs

Refers to the collective organs and bowels in Traditional Chinese Medicine, which are categorised into five main organ systems: Lung, Spleen, Liver, Heart, and Kidney.

  • 經絡:Meridians

Invisible channels carrying Qi (vital energy) and connecting organs, tissues, and points on the body.

  • 氣血:Qi and blood

Two essential substances that are crucial for maintaining health and vitality.

  • 穴位:Acupuncture point

Specific spots on the body, located along energy pathways called meridians, that are stimulated to influence the body’s vital energy (Qi), relieve pain, promote healing, and balance bodily functions, with each point having a unique therapeutic meaning related to specific organs or conditions.

  • 氣虛:Deficiency of vital energy

Body lacks enough life force (Qi) to function optimally.

  • 《黃帝內經》:The Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon

An ancient Chinese medical text that has been treated as a fundamental doctrinal source for Chinese medicine for more than two millennia.

  • 辨證論治:Syndrome differentiation and treatment

Based on the identified syndrome, establish a treatment principle.

  • 四氣 - 寒、涼、温、熱:4 natures - cold, cool, warm, hot

These properties determine how the herb interacts with the body’s physiological processes.

  • 五味 - 酸、苦、甘、辛、鹹:5 flavours - Sour, bitter, sweet, pungent and salty.

Each flavor is associated with specific therapeutic actions.

  • 《本草綱目》:Compendium of Materia Medica

An encyclopedic gathering of medicine, natural history, and Chinese herbology compiled and edited by Li Shizhen.

  • 偏性:Extreme nature

An imbalance where Yin or Yang becomes excessive.

  • 君臣佐使:Four roles of herbs in a formula

Sovereign (chief herb), Minister (assistant herb), Assistant (adjuvant herb) and Guide (messenger herb).

  • 情志病:Emotional disease

Stem from imbalances in the body’s energy (Qi) and blood, where intense or prolonged emotions like anger, joy, worry, sadness and fear directly impact specific organ systems.

  • 七情內傷:Internal injuries from the seven emotions

Excessive or abnormal emotions of joy, anger, anxiety, thought, sorrow, fear and shock.

  • 藥食同源:Food & Medicine Homology

There is not a clear line between many foods and medicines.

  • 藥膳:Chinese herbal cuisine

  • 食療:Chinese Food Therapy

  • 健脾養胃、固腎益肺:Strengthen Spleen & Stomach, Consolidate Kidney & Benefit Lung

  • 涼茶:Chinese herb tea

A traditional medicinal drink made from various herbs, flowers, seeds, and fruits, popular in South China and Hong Kong.

  • 熱氣、上火:Excessive internal heat
